Fishing Rodeos
Fishing Rodeos in Plaquemines Parish
Large scale fishing tournaments or rodeos are as much of a tradition in Louisiana as Mardi Gras parades and festivals. And Plaquemines Parish is the capital of fishing rodeos in the state. Marinas like Venice, Cypress Cove and Delta Marina offer rodeos throughout the summer. Check out some of the major contests that include the Empire South Pass Rodeo, the second oldest fishing rodeo in the state and the widely popular Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic.
Louisiana Gulf Coast Billfish Classic
One of the most prestigious big game fishing tournaments in the Gulf of Mexico, the Louisiana Gulf Coast Billfish Classic, is Louisiana's #1 marlin fishing tournament. The event is hosted annually by Cypress Cove Marina at the end of May. Tournament competition begins with registered boats leaving from Cypress Cove Marina in Venice, Louisiana and Hurricane Hole Marina in Grand Isle, Louisiana.
Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo
Every year at the end of August the town of Empire comes together for one of their largest rodeos and events of the year. There's great food, camaraderie and southern hospitality shared by everyone involved, and the local residents love to entertain. For over 70 years the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo will host teams from South Louisiana in search of the largest tarpon, inshore and offshore species. Bring your family and friends to this year's event for nightly live music and experience true Cajun culture, hosted by Delta Marina.
Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic
The Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic is presented and hosted by Cypress Cove Marina, located in Venice, Louisiana and features a modified-release format for billfish species, along with BIG prize money for Blue Marlin, Tag or Release, Dolphin, Tuna, and Wahoo. There is something for everyone at this rodeo. The tournament name originates from the deepwater canyons off the Gulf coast of Louisiana: the Mississippi Canyon (named after the mighty Mississippi River, not our neighboring state) and the Green Canyon, both home to true, world-class sportfishing. Louisiana is home to the 1st “Grander” Blue Marlin caught in the Gulf of Mexico (1018.50 lbs.), along with monster Dolphin (state record 71.25 lbs.), 200 pound-plus Yellowfin Tuna (state record 240.19 lbs.), and 100 pound-plus Wahoo (state record 139.25 lbs.).
